Boxing Classes in Singapore CBD: What to Expect on Your First Day
If you've been curious about boxing but haven't taken the first step, you're not alone. For most people, walking into a boxing gym for the first time feels intimidating. You don't know anyone. You're not sure what to wear. You have no idea what's going to happen.
This post is for you. We'll walk you through exactly what happens on your first day at Sweat Science Studio — so you can show up confident, not nervous.
Why Boxing is Booming in Singapore's CBD
Over the past few years, boxing has quietly become one of Singapore's most popular fitness choices for professionals. The reason isn't complicated: it's an incredibly efficient workout that also genuinely de-stresses you.
A one-hour boxing class burns 400–600 calories, engages your full body, and demands enough focus that you simply can't think about your emails while you're doing it. For anyone working long hours in the CBD, that mental reset is as valuable as the physical workout.
We're located at 42C North Canal Road — Level 4, a 5-minute walk from Clarke Quay MRT. Our members include bankers, lawyers, engineers, entrepreneurs, and everyone in between. Most of them had never thrown a punch in their lives before their first class.
What to Bring on Your First Day
Keep it simple. Here's what you need:
• Comfortable workout clothes. There's no dress code — shorts and a t-shirt are perfect.
• Water bottle. You will sweat.
• Boxing gloves and hand wraps (optional for your first visit). You can borrow a pair from us.
• An open mind. That's the most important thing.
We have shower facilities and changing rooms on-site, so if you're heading to the office after a morning class, you're fully covered.
The Class Structure: What Actually Happens
Our Boxing Basics class runs for 60 minutes. Here's the breakdown:
Warm-up (10 minutes)
We start with a general warm-up — jumping jacks, skipping, bodyweight movements — to get your heart rate up and your joints moving. This also gives your coach a chance to spot any new faces and make quick introductions.
Technique (20 minutes)
This is the core of Boxing Basics. Coach Hafiz walks you through fundamental techniques: stance, guard, footwork, and the basic punches — jab, cross, hook, uppercut. He demonstrates each one, then you practise. Don't worry about looking perfect. Everyone looks like a baby giraffe in their first session. That's normal.
Pad Work or Bag Work (20 minutes)
You'll either work on the heavy bag or do pad rounds with a partner. This is where it gets fun. Hitting something properly — with the right technique and real force — is one of the most satisfying things you'll do in a gym. Nothing else comes close.
Cool Down (10 minutes)
We bring the intensity down with stretching and breathing. Your coach will address the class, give feedback, and answer any questions.
What Boxing Basics Specifically Covers
Our Boxing Basics class is designed for absolute beginners. You will learn:
• Orthodox vs southpaw stance — which is natural for you
• How to hold your guard (protecting your face is skill number one)
• Proper footwork — how to move without crossing your feet
• The jab-cross combination — the foundation of all boxing
• Basic head movement — slipping and rolling punches
By the end of your second or third session, you'll be throwing combinations that feel natural. Most people are surprised by how quickly it clicks.
What Happens After Class
New members get a complimentary Body Composition Analysis as part of their first visit. In under two minutes, you'll get a full breakdown: weight, muscle mass, body fat percentage, and a baseline to track your progress against.
This isn't just a gimmick. It's how we ensure your training is actually working for your specific goals — whether that's fat loss, muscle gain, or general fitness.
The One Thing Most Beginners Get Wrong
They wait. They tell themselves they'll start 'once they get a bit fitter' or 'after they've done some research.' There's no version of that plan that works. You get fit by showing up, not by preparing to show up.
Your first class is free. You don't need any equipment. You don't need to be in shape. You just need to book it.
