How to Choose a Boxing Gym in Singapore: 7 Things to Check Before You Sign Up

Singapore has more boxing gyms than it did five years ago — and the quality varies significantly. Some gyms are genuinely excellent. Others are expensive, overcrowded, and staffed by coaches who are more concerned with aesthetic content than with whether you're actually learning anything.

Before you sign a membership contract, here are seven things worth checking. We'll also be transparent about how Sweat Science Studio stacks up on each one.

1. Coach Credentials

This is the most important factor and the one most beginners overlook. In Singapore, there is no mandatory certification required to call yourself a boxing coach. Anyone can open a gym and start teaching.

Ask specifically: what competitive experience does the head coach have? Have they actually competed — and won? Do they have structured coaching qualifications, or are they self-taught?

At Sweat Science Studio, Coach Hafiz is a three-time Singapore National Boxing Champion, Hong Kong City Cup Champion, and two-time Pesta Penang Champion. He has over a decade of competitive and coaching experience. This isn't marketing. It's the baseline you should expect from any gym you consider.

2. Class Size and Coach-to-Student Ratio

A boxing class with 25 students and one coach is not a boxing class. It's a cardio circuit with gloves. Actual technique development requires your coach to see what you're doing, correct it, and give you individualised cues.

Ask what the maximum class size is and whether there are assistant coaches for larger sessions. At Sweat Science Studio, we deliberately cap class sizes to maintain coaching quality. You are not a number here.

3. Location and Accessibility

This matters more than it sounds. The best gym in the world is useless if you don't go. If training before or after work is your plan, proximity to your office or MRT line is a practical factor.

We are located at 42C North Canal Road, Level 4 — a 5-minute walk from Clarke Quay MRT and well within reach of the CBD, Marina Bay, and Robertson Quay. If you work in the city, getting to us is easy.

4. Trial Class Availability

Any reputable gym should offer a trial class. If a gym asks you to commit to a membership before letting you try a class, that is a red flag. They either have low confidence in their product or they're relying on impulse sign-ups from people who haven't experienced the class yet.

At Sweat Science Studio, your first class is completely free. No payment, no commitment. We're confident enough in what we offer that we don't need to lock you in before you've decided.

5. Contract Terms

Read the fine print. Some gyms in Singapore operate on 6 or 12-month locked contracts with automatic renewals. If you sign one of these and the gym's quality declines, or your schedule changes, you may be stuck paying for a service you're no longer using.

We offer flexible membership options without punishing lock-in terms. If a gym can only retain members through contracts rather than through quality, that tells you something.

6. Beginner-Specific Classes

Being thrown into a mixed-level class as a complete beginner is a poor experience. You spend most of the session confused, you learn bad habits from trying to keep up, and you're unlikely to return.

Check whether the gym has dedicated beginner classes — not just beginner-friendly language on the website, but an actual structured curriculum for people who've never trained before. Our Boxing Basics class is built from the ground up for people with zero experience.

7. Facilities: Showers and Changing Rooms

This is a practical consideration that significantly affects your ability to train consistently. If you train before work or during lunch and the gym has no shower facilities, your options are limited.

Sweat Science Studio has full shower facilities and changing rooms. If you're a CBD professional who wants to train in the morning and head straight to the office, you can do that here.
